The history of the migration of Roma into Europe was abruptly brought to a halt for those Roma who ar­rived in the Romanian territories of the Southern and Eastern Carpathi­an Mountains. Roma who arrived in Wallachia and Moldavia in the second half of the 14th century were forced into bondage and slavery for five cen­turies, and their history was marked by a turning point comparable only to the enslavement of the Afro-American population in the United States
